On 25 March 2022 the law was amended to include any use of a mobile phone or other handheld device whilst driving.
What constitutes using a mobile phone?
- Illuminating the screen.
- Checking the time.
- Checking notifications.
- Unlocking the device.
- Making, receiving or rejecting a telephone or internet-based call.
- Sending, receiving or uploading oral or written content.
- Sending, receiving or uploading a photo or video.
- Utilising the camera, video or sound recording functionality.
- Drafting a text.
- Accessing stored data such as documents, books, audio files, photos, videos, films, playlists, notes or messages.
- Accessing an application.
- Accessing the internet.
What are the exceptions?
- Calling 999 or 112 in a genuine emergency, when it is unsafe or impracticable to stop.
- Making contactless payments whilst stationary.
- Remote controlled parking.
